Make This Year Different: How to Build a Simple, Sustainable Routine for Health and Fitness
January 14, 2025

As we step into the new year, many people are caught in the cycle of making, abandoning, or rethinking their New Year’s resolutions. If you're in the camp of wanting this year to be different, I’m right there with you. This year, let's shift our focus from vague resolutions to something more practical and sustainable: a simple routine.
If one of your goals this year is to get healthier and fitter, this post is for you. Instead of diving into an intense, overwhelming workout routine, let’s talk about how to start with small, achievable steps that will help you build consistency and long-term success.
1. Keep It Simple
If you're not already working out regularly, suddenly deciding to exercise five days a week might seem like a great idea—until it becomes too much to handle. Without a clear routine, you risk burnout, frustration, and even injuries. The key is to start simple and build from there.
For example, if you're brushing your teeth every morning (and I hope you are!), you can take that existing habit and stack something else onto it. Try doing heel raises and squats while brushing your teeth. No extra time or equipment needed—just a small change to enhance your current routine. This is what we call habit stacking, and it’s an easy way to add healthy habits without disrupting your day-to-day.
2. Break It Down into Small Chunks
Another way to make your health goals more attainable is to break them down into small, manageable steps. Let’s say your goal is to run a 5K this spring, but you haven’t been running much. Start by walking, and track your steps. A Fitbit or any fitness tracker can help you set a daily step goal and monitor your progress.
You don’t have to do everything at once. Gradually increase your steps—aim for just 10% more each week—and adjust based on how your body feels. As you get more comfortable, you can begin to add short jogs into your walks. By consistently and intentionally increasing your activity at a steady pace, you'll gradually work up to your goal without overwhelming yourself. Make a plan and adjust as needed!
3. Consistency is Key
Whatever your goal, the important part is to make it part of your routine. Take a moment to carve out time in your day for these activities and add them to your calendar. It's also essential to make sure you're warming up and stretching to avoid injuries, especially as you increase your intensity.
The most important thing is that you're building a foundation for a healthier future. Taking small, intentional steps now will keep you on track without compromising your long-term well-being.
