The Iceberg Effect: What’s Beneath the Surface of Health, Recovery, and Success

You’ve probably seen those iceberg memes—the ones that show a tiny bit of ice above the water while the majority of it remains hidden below the surface. It’s a powerful visual, and it perfectly describes so many aspects of life: health, wellness, recovery, and even business.

People often look at me and say, “Wow, Dawn, you recover so fast! You’re so healthy!” And while I appreciate the kind words, what they see is only the tip of the iceberg. What they don’t see is the dedication, consistency, and persistence that happens behind the scenes.

The same goes for any journey—whether it’s post-surgery recovery, building a business, or making healthier choices. The progress that becomes visible over time is the result of the small, daily efforts that no one else sees.

The Hidden Work of Recovery

Right now, my journey is all about healing. That means:

  • Icing and elevating my foot every single day.

  • Doing my exercises exactly as prescribed—three times a day, no excuses.

  • Going for walks that are just long enough—not overdoing it, but also not skipping them.

  • Practicing patience, even when I want to move faster.

Progress feels slow, sometimes painfully so. But each small step adds up. And that’s how any kind of growth happens.

Success Is Built on Small, Consistent Steps

This idea applies far beyond post-surgery recovery. Whether you’re improving your health, growing a business, or changing any aspect of your life, it’s about showing up every day—especially when you don’t feel like it.

For example, if you’re building a business, you might need to:

  • Intentionally put yourself out there, even when it feels uncomfortable.

  • Network, meet new people, and attend events consistently.

  • Share your offerings and successes so people actually know what you do.

People may think success just happens overnight, but in reality, it’s built through consistent, intentional actions.

The Same Goes for Health & Nutrition

Maybe you’re trying to improve your nutrition. In the beginning, social settings can be tough—one drink can lead to late-night pizza, wings, and ice cream before you even realize what happened. But as you build new habits, it gets easier. Over time, your choices become more automatic, and the effort you put in starts to show.

To others, it may seem like you just “figured it out” one day. But you know the truth—just like an iceberg, your success is built on everything beneath the surface.

There’s No Easy Button—But That’s Okay

I won’t lie—there’s no shortcut to lasting success in any area of life. But that’s not a bad thing. The small, 1% changes you make every day add up to something much bigger over time. And while the world may only see the final results, you’ll know the work it took to get there.

For now, I’ll keep doing the work—one stretch, one walk, one ice pack at a time. And if you’re working toward something big, keep going. Trust the process, embrace the journey, and know that every small effort counts. And if you want to know how I can support you in that process, let’s chat.

Because when the time comes, people might think you just got lucky. But you’ll know better.
